Why LAW Studies

Legal Studies offers advanced degree programs in comparative constitutional law, human rights, and international business law. The curriculum combines international and regional intellectual traditions and offers students hands-on experience and internship opportunities. It’s easy to see why you don’t have to become a lawyer just because you’ve done a law degree many choose other paths.

A law degree can give you the skills to be a successful lawyer but also a successful producer, politician, manager, journalist, diplomat or police officer a law degree equips you for almost any profession that requires intellectual strength combined with a practical approach to the world. Law, or legal studies, comes into contact with almost every area of human life, touching upon issues relating to business, economics, politics, the environment, human rights, international relations and trade. Law should therefore appeal to those who want to develop both abstract thinking and practical problem-solving.

In providing a framework through which to examine and understand different societies and cultures, law degrees are a useful way to prepare not only for specific legal careers, but for a broad range of professional roles and indeed, for life in general. As a law student, you can expect to learn how to tackle some of the most problematic – indeed, often seemingly irresolvable – conflicts and issues in modern society and morality. It is telling that the first academic degrees developed were all related to law.

Career Opportunities after Law Studies

The scope and future of law graduates in India is quite broad and varied. There are many different career paths that a law graduate can take, including working as a practicing lawyer, a legal advisor, a legal researcher, a legal consultant, or a legal educator. Additionally, the Indian government has been making significant investments in the legal infrastructure of the country, which is expected to create additional opportunities for law graduates. Some junior legal jobs include: calendaring clerk, court clerk, court legal advisor, court messenger, document coder, file clerk, to name a few.

While there is wide range of careers in law you can pursue once you’ve gained enough experience, typical junior roles will vary in the level of experience required and the amount of direct involvement they have in law proceedings. In terms of the legal profession itself, there is a growing demand for lawyers in India, particularly in the areas of corporate law, intellectual property law, and international trade law. Alternatively, students can take advantage of the relatively new field of legal apprenticeships, which involve undertaking training at a law firm in lieu of university study.

Typically, however, legal career hopefuls complete undergraduate or postgraduate studies in law and then undertake “articling” or a work placement with a law firm, working as a trainee lawyer, articled clerk, judicial clerk or associate. In terms of future trends, it is expected that the use of technology in the legal profession will continue to increase, which may create new opportunities for law graduates with experience in technology-related fields. If you’re studying under English common law, this is when you decide whether you want to become a barrister or solicitor in order to then pursue specific further studies, training and examinations.
